New and improved pre-school

August 20, 2012

Parents,

Some erroneous information appears to be “going around” about the changes to the Shoshone School District pre-school program.  The “rumor” that the school district has said that “no preschool” for our community will be provided, and we have shut it down and walked away is simply not true. In order to improve, we have formed a partnership with another agency providing similar service.  We remain in the preschool business and expect to deliver an improved program to our children.  I would like to take a minute to help clear up the misperceptions by briefly detailing how our joint Head Start/Shoshone School District pre-school program works.
The Shoshone School District and Head Start began working together last year in an attempt to best serve our community.  Both parties discovered the obvious redundancy of having two separate pre-schools serving the same community in such close proximity to each other.  After a series of meetings between the two organizations and much research it became clear the best way to serve our children was to join forces in a joint preschool operation.  It was clear this would improve our service over the long run.
We committed our partnership understandings into a formal relationship via a written agreement.  This agreement is similar to many other local and national school districts that form partnerships with Head Start.  It is not unusual, in fact it is quite common for these partnerships to develop and prosper.
While the students will physically attend preschool in the Head Start building, the school district retains involvement.  We will still provide speech and other IEP services.  In fact, we believe these services will be improved in the new partnership.   The district will provide the lead in delivery of these services, as well as work in other capacities with Head Start.
Both organizations plan to continue to hold “child find” meetings.  Both organizations plan on continuing to work both together and individually to find and serve children.  Both organizations plan to continue to monitor progress of students.
Questions about day to day schedules and such should be directed directly to Jay Therber, the Head Start teacher in Shoshone.  IEP and IEP related questions should be directed to Mr. Perry, Shoshone special ed director.  The first year of this partnership will be one of transition, so really for any question, it could be directed to either Head Start or the school district and we will work together to ensure everyone has the questions answered.  We are committed to making this work!

Thank you,

Rob Waite
Superintendent
Shoshone School District

Welcome new Parent liaison

Hello,

My name is Sarah Maxwell. I am a forty-nine year old empty nester. I have three girls, who are in college, or graduated at this time. I have a master’s degree in elementary education, but graduated with a bachelor in music education at Eastern Oregon University. I look forward to being the community liaison between Shoshone Elementary, parents, and the surrounding community. I enjoy living in a small town atmosphere and try to stay involved and connected. My hobbies include hiking, horseback riding, singing, and reading.

I have always had a heart to teach children and have participated in many areas of education. Teaching with passion creates students with passion, who will move on to imagine, and create, the world that we all will live in. I believe that all children can learn, and can love to learn.

My involvement in the education process has lasted over twenty years. I was a parent volunteer at the local elementary school and a teacher’s assistant for four years. I taught gifted and talented reading groups and the struggling math students. Finally, I worked as a substitute assistant in the SPED program at the high school level.

I anticipate an excellent year with your students and look forward to meeting their parents. If there are any problems or if you just want some questions answered, contact me at 208-886-2381 ext. 256 or e-mail at saramaxw@shoshone.k12.id.us.

Sincerely,

Sarah E. Maxwell

Many of you have seen information regarding what we hope will become an annual celebration of the success of our school district, the “Celebration of Success” Banquet.  We hope this will be like no other awards ceremony.  We hope it will be about friends and families taking time out to celebrate the accomplishments we have all had in the past year working together to provide a quality education for our children!
The evening will begin with a catered dinner.  Serving will begin at 5:30.  After everyone has had a chance to eat and socialize, we will begin the awards portion of the evening.  The awards are designed to be representative of every group of people that contributes to the success of our school district.  “Volunteer” of the year will represent all the great parents, grandparents and others that volunteer time to help move education forward.  “Teacher” and “Support Staff Employee” of the year represent all the great employees we have working in our school.  Students of the year represent all the great students we have working hard to prepare for the future.  The final award of the evening will be the “Distinguish Alumni” award will represent the great things possible with an education from Shoshone.
Get your tickets today to join us for a great evening.  Tickets are only $8.50, which includes a great meal.  We have had a successful year, come celebrate!
